Anti-Money Laundering (AML)
Regulatory framework requiring casinos to verify player identity, monitor transactions, and report suspicious activity to authorities.
Also known as: AMLMoney laundering compliance
Anti-Money Laundering (AML) is the regulatory framework that requires online casinos to implement processes preventing the operator from being used to launder illegal funds.
What operators must do
Every regulated online casino runs an AML program that includes:
- KYC verification — identity, age, address, payment method ownership. See our KYC glossary entry.
- Source of funds checks — for deposits above a threshold (usually €2,000 at UKGC, €10,000 elsewhere). See our Source of Funds glossary entry.
- Transaction monitoring — automated flagging of unusual patterns (structuring, rapid-fire deposits, offsetting bets).
- Suspicious activity reporting — filing SARs with the financial intelligence unit when patterns cross a reporting threshold.
- Politically exposed person (PEP) screening — enhanced due diligence for public officials.
What players actually see
- KYC document requests.
- Source-of-funds document requests (income proof).
- Account holds while suspicious transactions are reviewed.
- Occasional forced closure with balance returned to originating payment method.
Regulatory bodies
- EU: 6AMLD (6th Anti-Money Laundering Directive) applies to all EU-licensed operators.
- UK: MLRs 2017 as amended, enforced by the Gambling Commission.
- Canada (Ontario): PCMLTFA + FINTRAC.
- US (state-licensed): BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) applies to casinos.
- Curaçao: adopted FATF standards; enforcement uneven.
- Anjouan: nominal AML rules; enforcement limited.
Practical player takeaways
- Never lie during KYC or Source of Funds. Discrepancies flag your account permanently.
- Do not “structure” deposits into small amounts to stay below thresholds. Anti-structuring is specifically flagged.
- If asked for SOF documents, provide them promptly. Delaying or arguing rarely helps.
- Use consistent identity across operators — same name, same DOB, same address on all accounts.
