[ MEDIUM variance · 2313 titles · NEUTRAL baseline · repriced September 2026 ]
Medium-volatility slots.
The default variance level for modern paytables — where the majority of the catalog lives. Balanced hit-frequency, moderate max-win potential, standard deviation wide enough that a 200-spin session can visibly diverge from RTP but not wide enough to routinely bust a properly sized bankroll on a bad run. NEUTRAL Sensible baseline for real-money play. Wagering can clear here, but variance is meaningful — expect the ~30% of sessions where the sample runs 15–20% under book RTP.

Volatility · FAQ (medium-volatility)
What actually counts as medium-volatility volatility?
Volatility is the standard deviation of the paytable’s outcome distribution — how far single-spin results scatter around the RTP mean. Studios classify their releases on a 1–5 scale (low → high) using their internal certification tests; we normalise those labels to the five bands you see here. A medium-volatility-vol title, in this hub, means the studio’s own math sheet marks it in that band. Roughly 20–30% base-game hit rate, with ±30–50% around expected return over 500 spins. Refreshed September 2026.
Is medium-volatility volatility good or bad for bonus wagering?
Sensible baseline for real-money play. Wagering can clear here, but variance is meaningful — expect the ~30% of sessions where the sample runs 15–20% under book RTP. The mechanical reason: wagering-through is a race between your bankroll and the sample cost of the paytable. Lower volatility shrinks the standard deviation of that sample cost, so 500 spins reliably deliver something close to the RTP mean; higher volatility inflates it, so 500 spins can easily deliver a 40% drawdown before a single big feature. See the volatility & variance guide for the distribution math.
How do I combine this with RTP filters?
Volatility and RTP are independent axes — a 97.5% high-vol title has the same mean return as a 97.5% low-vol title, but the path to that mean is completely different. Best-of-both for wagering: cross this hub with highest-RTP (≥ 97.5%). Cheapest-clear-per-spin for max-win chasing: cross with the same RTP tier but pick from high volatility for the ceiling.
What bankroll do I actually need for a medium-volatility-vol session?
Bankroll of 300–500× base bet advised for wagering multipliers above 30×. That number is a ruin-probability floor, not a target — it keeps the probability of busting out before the wagering multiplier clears under ~5% at typical medium-volatility-vol variance. It assumes flat base-bet sizing and no chase behaviour. Ratchet the bankroll multiplier up if the wagering multiplier is above 30×, or if the max-bet cap forces you to stake close to your bankroll unit.
Is base-game hit rate the same as feature-hit rate?
No. Base-game hit rate is the frequency of any paying combination on a normal spin — 20–30% base-game hit rate at medium-volatility volatility. Feature-hit rate is the frequency of the bonus round (usually free spins or a bonus feature), and that number is much lower — typically once every 100–300 spins, sometimes once every 500+ on high-vol releases. Studios rarely publish feature-hit rate; the medium-volatility-vol classification is your best proxy.
Where does the volatility label come from — studio or operator?
Studio. The certification body (GLI, iTech Labs, eCOGRA) validates the paytable math and the studio publishes a volatility rating alongside RTP on the game info panel. Unlike RTP, the volatility rating cannot be re-varianted by the operator — the paytable’s outcome distribution is fixed once the maths file is licensed. Always check the info panel in-client for both fields before any deposit against a wagering balance.
18+. Volatility bands are computed at build time (September 2026) from studio-published variance ratings as shipped on each paytable. Hit-frequency and session-swing ranges are typical envelopes for the band, not per-title guarantees — a specific release inside a band can fall outside the range if the studio ships an unusually flat or spiked distribution. The bankroll floor is a ruin-probability heuristic and assumes flat base-bet sizing. Verify the info panel for both RTP variant and volatility rating in-client before any deposit against a wagering balance.
