An RTP audit is a third-party verification that the Return to Player (RTP) percentage a game provider claims matches the actual mathematical model of the game.
Why audits exist
Providers claim RTP. Operators sometimes have the technical ability to choose between multiple RTP versions of the same game. Players cannot verify the claimed RTP by playing. Audits are the trust bridge.
Common auditors
- eCOGRA (UK-based) — the most widely-cited; audits Microgaming, NetEnt, Play’n GO, and dozens of others.
- GLI (Gaming Labs International) — US-based; strong North American and Asian market presence.
- iTech Labs — Australia-based; widely used at MGA and offshore operators.
- BMM Testlabs — global, older-established.
Each auditor tests the game’s random number generator (RNG), verifies the mathematical model against the claimed RTP, and issues a certificate. Certificates typically valid 12 months, renewed annually.
What an audit certifies
- RNG fairness: outputs are statistically random and not manipulable.
- Stated RTP accuracy: over N million simulated spins, actual payout matches claim within tolerance.
- Game rule adherence: displayed paytable matches actual payout logic.
What an audit does NOT certify
- Session outcomes: no audit prevents your specific session from losing.
- Operator RTP choice: many games ship with multiple RTP versions; auditor certifies each, but operator picks which to display. Check the game info page.
- Live game fairness: physical live-dealer tables are audited by a different framework (usually the operator’s internal video + supervision).
Finding audit certificates
- Provider website: NetEnt, Microgaming, Play’n GO all publish current auditor certificates.
- eCOGRA certified operators page: ecogra.org lists all currently-certified sites.
- In-game info modal: some regulated operators embed a link to the current audit certificate.
If you can’t find the audit certificate for a game or operator, it may still be audited — but you have no evidence of it.
